Curriculum Reflection - Art & Design

This term, the art and design department within KS3 lessons has focussed on the contextual studies area of the subject and moving through to elements of materials experimentation relevant to their themes. This embeds subjects’ knowledge and ensures the students understand development from being inspired by an artist. Eventually, they will respond personally, showing their inspiration. Artists they have studied have been varied in material theme and style. Every year, the group looks at Cornish artists during their initial research.

Year 7 are learning key skills of drawing to help inform their own practice and build confidence with composition and observation. Already students have shown a growing understanding of tone and form. Next term they will expand this knowledge of colour and shading.

Year 8 are focussing on ‘Tea Party ‘as a theme and have recently moved through to working with oil pastels and using online tutorials to develop practice. They will develop into collage and then sculpture. Year 8 have also participated in The Cornish Maritime History Day, celebrating local heritage and traditions. Working with professional artists and singers. This was celebrated in The Cornish Times.

Year 9 students have been looking at contemporary artists and techniques such as tattoos and abstract, following the theme of fish. They have touched on elements of marketing and how artists use social media to exhibit their work worldwide.

By Christmas all students at KS3 will have produced a clay fish for the community arts projects.

Year 10 art students have had a fantastic productive start to their coursework. Their theme, The Seaside, is split into 5 mini-units starting with exploring water, waves and expressive art. They have experimented with flicking paint and using utensils for paint applications. It’s been messy but engaging and the results have been truly varied. They are starting a new project focussing on still life and illustrated fish recipes. In spring, we are hoping to visit the Maritime Museum.

The year 11 students have produced a full portfolio of themed work. They are ready to take this work into a coursework finish piece which celebrates their individuality and creativity.
